Someone says your transfer was “returned to sender,” but the money has not appeared in your account. The next useful question is: returned to whom, and at which stage?

When a transfer service sits between you and the recipient’s bank, money can travel back to that service before the service refunds you. Ask for evidence of the return and, if applicable, separate evidence of your refund. Keeping those stages apart makes the next support conversation more precise.

1. Establish what “returned” means

Ask the provider whether the recipient’s bank has rejected the payment, whether returned funds have reached the provider, or whether the provider has already sent your refund. Record which event has actually happened.

Wise says it cannot process a refund until it receives the money. For a transfer returned by the recipient’s bank, that means waiting for the funds to reach Wise first. Its explanation supports an important distinction: a reported bank return does not, by itself, establish that your refund has already been issued. Wise refund guidance

Treat a support message as a starting point for clarification. Ask which institution currently needs to act, what evidence is available and when you should follow up.

2. Request confirmation from the returning bank

If the recipient’s bank says it sent the money back, ask for its return confirmation rather than another copy of the original outbound receipt.

Revolut’s UK guidance specifically recommends obtaining a return confirmation from the bank that reverted an outbound transfer when the money has not reached the sender’s account. It says the recipient can usually request this document from their bank as a PDF. This is Revolut’s guidance for that situation, not a promise that every bank uses the same document. Our editorial checklist is to ask for the return date, amount, currency, destination institution and available tracking reference. Ask support which of those details it needs to investigate. Keep the original payment receipt alongside the return document so the two movements can be matched.

3. If the provider received the return, ask about your refund

Once the provider confirms receipt, ask what happens next. Will the transfer be corrected and sent again, or refunded? Has it already acted?

Wise’s consumer guidance explains that, after money comes back because recipient details were wrong, customers may be able to correct the details or cancel for a refund. It also says a recipient’s bank can reject a payment even when the details are correct; the recipient may need to ask that bank why. Wise cancellation explanations

For a refund, request its issue date, amount, currency, destination payment method and relevant receipt or reference. Check whether the destination is your bank account, card or provider balance rather than assuming which account to watch.

4. Use the reference for the relevant payment leg

An original transfer reference helps identify the payment you sent. Ask whether there is a separate reference for the return or refund now being investigated.

If you funded the transfer by card, the provider may refund that card payment. Wise’s card-refund instructions tell customers with an overdue refund to download the transfer receipt, find the Acquirer Reference Number, or ARN, in its Refund Details section, and provide the PDF to their issuing bank. Card references belong to the card-refund stage. They are not a universal substitute for bank-return evidence. Stripe’s documentation also describes ARN, STAN and RRN references, depending on availability. A card reversal can instead remove the original charge without creating a separate credit. 5. Confirm the clock and the amount

Ask which event starts the provider’s quoted waiting period. Was it the bank’s return instruction, the provider’s receipt of the funds, or the refund issue date?

Use the estimate and escalation process for your provider, location and payment method. Do not combine published timelines from different services into a guaranteed arrival date.

Ask for a breakdown if the returned amount differs from the original payment. Keep the principal, service fee, currency conversion and any deductions separate. The principal is the amount designated for transfer; your total spending budget may also include fees. Do not assume a refund of principal restores that whole budget. Wise’s partner documentation notes that some SWIFT partial refunds can be reduced by intermediary-bank fees; that is a specific example, not a rule for every return. Wise bank-refund documentation

A useful support request

Please confirm which stage this transfer has reached: returned by the receiving bank, received back by your service, or refunded to me. Please provide the relevant return or refund confirmation, the amount and currency, the date, and the reference my bank should use. What should I do if the funds remain missing after your stated timeframe?

Keep the reply and case number together. Share financial documents through verified support channels, not public comments.

The goal is a documented path back to your money, with a clear next step at each stage. This is educational information, not personalized financial advice or a guarantee of recovery.
