You booked a hotel through a familiar travel website. Then a message arrives asking you to pay the property directly. Is that normal, or should you stop?

Start with the reservation you already made. A property collecting an agreed payment is different from someone changing the payment instructions after booking. Before sending money, establish what is being collected, who is collecting it and where the original terms authorize that collection.

Check the payment model before judging the request

Booking.com describes three accommodation-payment arrangements: the property charges at the accommodation, the property charges in advance, or Booking.com organizes advance payment to the property. Direct collection therefore is not automatically evidence of fraud. The arrangement must fit your particular booking. Booking.com payment explanation

Expedia also describes Pay Later arrangements in which the travel provider collects payment, normally in local currency during the stay or as disclosed during booking. That is different from being asked to move the reservation itself elsewhere. Expedia terms

Platform rules are not interchangeable. Airbnb generally requires reservation payments to remain on its platform, while allowing specific exceptions. Its help guidance says hotels may collect appropriately disclosed incidentals deposits and certain fees directly. It also describes limited arrangements for other authorized fees and disclosed taxes. A legitimate exception on one platform does not establish permission on another. Airbnb fee exceptions

Compare the request with the original reservation

Open the travel app or website yourself rather than following the new message's link. Pull up your confirmation, receipt and payment policy. Our suggested comparison is simple:

  • What charge is this: room balance, tax, deposit, optional extra or something else?
  • Was it disclosed before you booked, and was any part already paid?
  • Who was supposed to collect it, by what method and at what time?
  • Is the requested amount in the same currency as the agreed charge?
  • Does paying change the reservation, cancellation terms or refund route?

A label such as “verification” does not answer those questions. Ask for a clear description of the charge and a written explanation of any difference. Keep the original confirmation alongside the new request so you can point to the exact inconsistency.

Treat urgency as a reason to verify

Booking.com's traveler guidance warns that phishing messages may include convincing stay details and pressure travelers to resupply payment information. It advises checking the confirmation and contacting Customer Service when in doubt. Knowing your dates or price is therefore not enough to establish that a request is genuine. For an unexpected link or changed payment method, our recommendation is to use the platform's support route you opened independently. Ask support to check whether the request matches the reservation's payment policy. If you also contact the property, use contact details from a previously trusted record or its independently located official website, not solely the disputed message. Request confirmation in writing; do not let a short countdown substitute for verification.

Separate the payment from the travel budget

An amount requested today is not necessarily the total cost of the trip. It may represent only one installment or an incidental hold. Ask whether the amount will actually be collected or merely authorized, what it covers, and how it relates to the remaining balance.

Illustrative arithmetic only: suppose an agreed room charge is €600, with €200 already paid toward it. The remaining room principal is €400. That calculation does not prove a new €400 request is genuine. It also is not a €400 total trip budget: separately disclosed taxes, transport, meals, conversion costs and any deposit requirements still need their own entries. No exchange rate or real hotel's pricing is used in this example.

Keep platform protection and bank help distinct

Airbnb warns that choosing to pay for the booking outside Airbnb loses the AirCover protection attached to platform bookings. That warning should not be confused with its separately disclosed hotel-fee exceptions. If someone asks you to replace an existing platform reservation with an off-platform deal, check the protection consequences before agreeing. Airbnb payment guidance

If you already paid and suspect a problem, contact the booking platform and your payment provider promptly through trusted channels. For a Visa card charge, Visa directs cardholders to their issuer or bank to dispute it and notes that transaction details may be required. Ask about the process and applicable deadlines; do not assume a refund or chargeback will succeed. Visa consumer support

Save the reservation, original payment terms, receipt, amount and currency, new message, and support responses. Explain whether you authorized the payment and what later raised concern. A payment you authorized but now dispute is not the same description as an unrecognized transaction.

The useful question is not simply “Is this outside the platform?” It is “Does this payment match my verified reservation and this platform's rules?” Resolve the mismatch before paying.
