Your transfer has a reassuring status, but the recipient says the money is not there. Before sending again, find out what that particular status means. Payment providers do not all use the same labels for the same event.
The practical goal is to establish where the first payment went. A second payment can create a second problem if the original later arrives.
Read the status in context
Wise says its Complete status means it has sent the money to the recipient bank; that bank may still need time to release it. Revolut’s UK guidance likewise allows for recipient-bank posting after a completed transfer. These are provider-specific explanations, not a universal definition or a guaranteed waiting period. Wise completion guidance and Revolut UK guidance.
Western Union’s UK definitions illustrate the difference. Available refers to cash ready for pickup, while Received means cash was collected. Paid means credited to the receiver’s bank account or mobile wallet; Delivered means credited to the receiver’s bank account. If that conflicts with the recipient’s experience, ask the provider to investigate the discrepancy rather than assuming that every completed-looking status simply means money is on its way. Western Union tracking guidance.
Check the payment record and the receiving account
Open the provider’s official app or website yourself. Confirm the transfer date, delivery method, destination currency, recipient details and quoted arrival estimate. Have the recipient inspect transaction history rather than only the current balance.
For Wise transfers, the deposit may be labelled with Wise or a banking partner instead of the sender’s name. A further currency conversion can also make the amount less obvious. That possibility is a reason to compare the details, not a reason to dismiss the missing-payment report. Wise completion guidance.
Get evidence the bank can use
A screenshot of a green check mark may not contain enough information to locate a payment. Download the provider’s transfer confirmation and ask which reference the receiving bank should use.
Wise identifies the banking-partner reference on its confirmation PDF as particularly useful for this purpose. The sender downloads the confirmation and can supply it to the recipient for a bank enquiry. Wise confirmation instructions.
For a SWIFT wire, ask the sending provider what payment message or tracking evidence it can provide. Xe currently describes the pacs.008 format, previously MT103. Do not assume that every transfer uses SWIFT or has this document. A payment message can help an investigation; it is not your own verification that the recipient can spend the money. Escalate the mismatch without starting over
Follow the timing and support instructions for your provider, country and transfer route. If the stated arrival window has passed, give official support the transfer reference and explain what the recipient’s bank has checked. If account details are wrong, or a status says collected but the recipient denies collecting it, contact support promptly.
Keep the original confirmation, support case number and dates together. Ask what happens next and when you should follow up. Do not assume that starting an investigation also cancels the transfer or guarantees a refund.
An illustrative example
A traveler sends a $500 principal to a relative. The service fee is additional; $500 is not the traveler’s total travel budget or necessarily the total account debit. The app shows Complete, but the relative cannot identify a matching credit.
Instead of sending another $500, the pair compare the receipt, currency and transaction history, then ask the provider and receiving bank to trace the first payment. This is a fictional workflow example, not a live quote, fee estimate or promise of recovery.
Keep the reference private
Use official bank and provider support channels. Avoid posting unredacted receipts, account details or tracking references in public comments. Western Union specifically limits sharing its MTCN to the receiver or its representative. Western Union tracking guidance.
The useful question is not just “Does it say complete?” It is “What does this provider mean, and what evidence can locate this payment?”
